Time-Turners and how to use them responsibly.

What is a Time-Turner?

A Time-Turner is a magical device used for time travel. It allows the user to go back in time for up to five hours. Going forwards in time (into the future) is not possible. Students of Hogwarts may apply for a Time-Turner in order to attend more classes during a school year. It is required of the students to follow a strict set of rules, or they lose access to the device. They most commonly look like an hourglass on a necklace.

Before using the Time-Turner together with Harry to so save Sirius Black and Buckbeak
Hermione used it to attend extra classes at Hogwarts.
Let's have a look at how that worked out for her by checking out Hermione's timetable. Try to answer the following questions:

  • Which additional subjects is Hermione able to attend because of her Time-Turner?
  • How many hours does Hermione spend in class each week in total?
  • How many hours do you spend in class each week, compared to Hermione?
  • Which subject do you think sounds the most interesting?

Now that you had a look at Hermione's timetable and compared it to your own, turn to your partner and
discuss the following points:
  • What do you think about the amount of time Hermione spends on schoolwork?
  • Do you agree that school should always be more important than free time?
  • Don't forget to take some notes!
Don't forget:

Every class comes with homework and regular tests.
